Back from another really enjoyable and successful Fiesta. Arriving in Portugal at Vilamoura the week previous to the Fiesta we were greeted with a magnificent sun rising from the sea! Indeed we only had rain on one golf day in the four weeks we were away. It was great to meet up with old friends and several new faces. Keith was at his best sorting us out and getting us going with much better gold and hopes for better results in 2014. Helena and Michael were always on hand to help, fetch, arrange and encourage us all and the lunch and wine events were fantastic. Even if Michael's bang with a spoon to make an announcement caused Philip to throw coffee over himself and Helena!! Gave US all a big laugh.
At our first session staying at Vila Gale in Lagos we met Keith Wild and Peter Miller new to the Fiesta and who joined in very well. A surprise was to see Arthur Bradley and Winnie Everett join us again all the way from South Africa. Must be our furthest participants. We played Palmares, Morgado and the newly finished Espiche. We were warned to take lots of balls to Espiche and most of us certainly needed them. Good fun but not our favourite course. Although it is always good to play a new course. We had a splendid lunch and wine tasting at a lovely restaurant by the beach.
We then moved on to Tavira for the last two weeks, when sadly Keith Wild had to leave us, but promised to return next year. Peter Miller came on for a further week and we hope he will also return next year. One of Keith's pupils young Calantha Newby also joined us and fitted in very well with the wrinklies! We also met the Hart brothers Bill and Neil and so hope they will also join us again and were joined by Rosemary Digby and Gillian Gardner Smith. We played the old favourite Benamor, my favourite Quintal da Ria, Quinta da Vale, Castro Marim and the wonderful Monte Rei on our last day. How fortunate we are to have the opportunity to play these prestigious courses. I just don't know how Michael and Helena manage it. We also had two wine tastings and lunch, one at Castro Marim and another at Restaurante Marisqueria in Cacela. Most ate out at the various local restaurants in the evenings, all of which are near to the Hotel. Pat Lowing and Keith arranged two evenings of a quiz on golf rules which was very much enjoyed and we all learnt a lot, even the pro!!!! On Valentine's night Helena and Michael presented all the ladies with a charming pull box with memento of Portugal written on the inside lid. Graham Wykes also presented the ladies with a heart shaped box of delicious chocolates. What a smoothie. We love you Graham!
Keith Robson's clinics were very special this year, with lots of fun competitions and I don't think there was anyone who didn't benefit from them. Thank you so much Keith. I am sure all our handicaps will come down this year.
Although we left on one of the hottest days of the trip, all good things must come to an end and we certainly missed the bad weather in the UK.
The Douro trip in October 9 - 19 has not many places left so if you are hoping to come I need your £200 deposits now please, cheques made out to me and I will send on to Michael and Helena.
